What is mobile data usage?

Mobile data usage is the amount of data your phone sends and receives over the mobile network when you are not on Wi-Fi. Every video, map, photo upload and app update counts towards your plan.

When you travel, you rely on mobile data far more than at home: for maps, translations, tickets and staying in touch.

How do you calculate your data usage?

No more guessing how many gigabytes to pack for your trip. Our calculator turns your daily phone habits into a clear data estimate, so you only pay for what you really use.

Behind the scenes, it multiplies the time you spend on each activity by its typical data use and adds everything up. All you have to do is follow three quick steps:

  1. 1Choose the profile that sounds most like you, or go with “Personalized” to start from scratch.
  2. 2Set how many hours a day you spend on social media, streaming, video calls, maps and more.
  3. 3See your estimated data usage and the plan size that fits your trip best.

How we estimate your data usage

Frequently asked questions about data usage

How much mobile data do I need?

It depends on how you use your phone. Our data calculator gives you a personal estimate. Just enter how many hours a day you spend on social media, streaming, navigation, video calls, and more.

Two examples from the calculator:

  • Casual browser: a bit of social media, music, maps, browsing, and messaging. About 670 MB a day, or around 22 GB a month
  • Remote worker: music, browsing, lots of messaging, and two hours of video calls a day. About 2.1 GB a day, or around 65 GB a month

If you make video calls or stream every day, plan for 50 GB or more. For heavy use, an unlimited data plan is often the better choice.

How many GB of mobile data does the average person use per month?

In Western Europe, the average smartphone used about 22 GB of mobile data per month in 2024, according to the Ericsson Mobility Report. Your own usage can be much lower or higher. HD streaming and automatic photo backups make the biggest difference. Use our data calculator to see where you stand.

How long does 1 GB of data last?

It depends on what you’re doing. Everyday activities like sending messages, writing emails, and using navigation use very little data, so 1 GB lasts more than 100 hours. Web browsing is also light: 1 GB gets you around 20 hours of news, search, and shopping. Music and podcasts are similarly kind to your data, with about 14 hours per GB.

Anything with video uses data much faster. Scrolling through social media feeds with videos uses up 1 GB in about 1 hour and 40 minutes, video calls in about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and short videos like TikTok or Reels in about 1 hour and 10 minutes. HD video streaming on a phone is the most data-hungry activity, with 1 GB lasting about 40 minutes.

These are average values from our data calculator. Your actual usage depends on video quality, app settings, and the network.

What activities use the most data?

Video streaming is the clear leader. On a phone, HD video uses about 1.5 GB per hour. On the highest quality setting, it can be much more: Netflix says HD can use up to 3 GB per hour and 4K up to 7 GB.

Next come short videos like TikTok and Reels at about 840 MB per hour, video calls at about 800 MB, and social media at about 600 MB. Music (about 70 MB per hour) and web browsing (about 50 MB) are much lighter. Navigation and messaging barely register.

The biggest data drains often run in the background: automatic app updates, cloud photo backups, and large downloads.

How can I manage my data usage when traveling abroad?

Before you leave, check your carrier’s roaming terms. Within the EU, many carriers let you use your data at domestic rates, though often with fair use limits. Outside the EU, for example in Switzerland or Turkey, roaming can get expensive fast.

The easiest option is to estimate your needs with our data calculator, then get an eSIM data plan for your destination before you go. Set the eSIM as your line for cellular data and turn off data roaming on your main SIM. That way, you won’t pay any roaming charges. Use Wi-Fi whenever it’s available, such as at your hotel, a café, or the airport.

What happens if I run out of data?

That depends on the provider. Some data plans cut off or throttle your connection until you buy more data or a new billing period starts. Others charge extra fees, which can get expensive quickly, especially when roaming.

With EuroSIM, there are no hidden extra charges. When your data runs out, your data connection stops until you buy a new data plan. If you need more than 50 GB, an unlimited data plan is the better choice.
